Mobile Farm Stand

The Mattapan Mobile Farm Stand began with a simple premise: if people can’t get to fresh food where they live, why not bring fresh food to them?

In Mattapan, one of Boston’s most diverse neighborhoods, access to fresh produce can be a challenge.  In collaboration with local health advocacy group Mattapan Food & Fitness Coalition (MFFC) and Brookwood Community Farm, BR+A+CE worked to design a pedal-powered farm stand to supplement  the weekly Mattapan farmer’s market and help reach underserved parts of the neighborhood.

The mobile farm stand is capable of safety  transporting and displaying eight bins of produce. Aided by gas springs, its origami-like bin covers and top bin carriers hinge open in opposite directions, creating a canopied display area. An abstraction of the letters MFFC is laser cut from the canopy as a custom perforation, casting dynamic shadows when open and reducing the weight of the leaves when in motion.

The Mattapan Mobile Farm Stand was a recipient of a grant from the Awesome Foundation, and a generous donation rom the office of the Mayor of Boston enabled MFFC to hire two members of its Vigorous Youth group to operate the farm stand for its inaugural season.

The volunteer team for the Mattapan Mobile Farm Stand project was comprised of designers, students, and educators brought together by BR+A+CE with the common goal of increasing access to fresh food in an underserved community and championing the power of design for social good. The mobile farm stand project was been led by Mykel Terada, John DiSalvo, and BR+A+CE co-founders Anthony Piemarini and Hansy Better Barraza.

Mykel and I first sat down at the beginning of June to envision what the mobile farm stand would look like. Three weeks, two pads of bristol paper, and countless cups of coffee later, the farm stand design is nearly finalized! During our daily charrette sessions, we worked to find a balance between an iconic […]

We held BR-A-CE’s first official fundraiser this past Saturday, a bike and stroller tune-up for donations.  The venue was on the outskirts of Harvard Square, and though it was overcast, it was a pleasant enough day for our volunteer bike mechanics to set up right on the brick sidewalks. We wound up recruiting enough cyclists in […]
